Education Options in Auckland

You have many options available for your child’s education. By law your child is entitled to attend early childhood education and school like every other child in New Zealand.

Inclusive Education policy (Ministry of Education NZ website)

The New Zealand Government’s policy concerning students with special needs is clearly spelt out in ‘Success for All – Every School, Every Child (PDF link currently unavailable)’. The policy places a heavy emphasis on inclusive education for all students. The vision in the document is to work towards developing a fully inclusive education system.

It outlines what is meant by confident schools, children and parents. The document also notes  key changes that will take place over the next few years to see that this will happen.

Inspirational Video on Inclusive Education “DON’T LIMIT ME” (YouTube)

Megan Bomgaars is a Denver youth with Down syndrome. Megan’s video is a powerful message and rallying cry for everyone.

Among Megan’s many achievements, she:

  • travelled to Washington, DC to accept the 2008 National High School Spirit of Sport Award, as an “individual who exemplifies the ideals of the positive spirit of sport”.

Megan’s message “DON’T LIMIT ME!” applies not only to those with Down syndrome, and not only to students with challenges, but to all kids and all adults.
