Welcoming your new baby

Congratulations on the birth of your baby

With a diagnosis of Down syndrome, things will be different from what you had expected. We want you to know that you are not alone and there are people across Auckland who understand the feelings you will be experiencing.

We also want you to know that your baby is a precious new life and has the same wants and needs as any other baby. We hope we can help your family celebrate your new baby.

When you first hear that your baby has or may have Down syndrome your emotions will take over. Typically the first thing you will want to know is what is Down syndrome and how will it effect your new baby and your family. You may want to know this information all in one go or you may want to find out this information in stages. Everyone is different in how they absorb this information and there is no right way or wrong way.

There is a huge amount of information about Down syndrome. You can find this information in books, publications and from many, many websites.

As a first place to start however ADSA can provide you with a new parent pack put together by the New Zealand Down Syndrome Association. ADSA has expanded on that and offers a more extensive pack. We can post it to you or organise to deliver it to you personally. Please contact us to tell us what will suit you best.
