Transition providers are contracted by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) to facilitate a smooth progression from school to community life for a young person with a disability who is Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) funded. In their final year at school, transition coordinators help the student with a disability, their family and education professionals from the school decide upon an appropriate community placement for post-school life. This is an important decision for any young person and requires planning and knowledge. Typically Transition Services provide information and support around:
- further adult education
- work experiences
- community experiences
- movement into or towards paid employment
- living and accommodation arrangements
- community participation and involvement (including recreational and leisure needs)
- acquisition of daily living skills needed for living within the community, and
- skills that will assist with achieving employment goals.
Disability Connect organise Transition seminars (free for parents) during the year and an annual Transition Expo which features most Auckland Transition and Vocational Programme Providers as well as an array of leisure, recreation, sports and information providers. Information about the seminars are put in ADSA’s weekly Enews, or you could call Disability Connect on 636 0351 and ask to be put on their mailing list. Read their Networker Magazine, dedicated to Transition. Everything you ever wanted to know about transitioning is in this edition.
